Easy DIY: Charmingly Rustic Hanging Chalkboard

Even with all of the modern technology — computers, the Internet, smart phones — it can still be a struggle to keep your everyday chores organized. Sometimes all you need is an old-fashioned to-do record and a easy check-off system. There’s something about that ritual — roughly physically crossing your targets off — that can leave someone feeling. But business doesn’t need to come at the price of design or style. If the prosaic choices at the big-box stores leave something to be desired, you can make your own chalkboard to-do list in a day.

This piece of wood was once a back panel to a little cabinet. The cabinet is now falling apart, but with projects like that you can still get use out of older furniture.

This chalkboard has a very simple design with rustic touches. By repurposing a sheet of scrap wood, you can increase the unpolished charm. Include dotted lines if you see yourself making lists. Keep this chalkboard in the kitchen to readily increase the supermarket or at the craft area for noting needed equipment. But the board can be used for fun too. Draw doodles onto it or leave candies messages to loved ones.

1. Wash your scrap piece of wood board. Use a ruler and pencil to mark the dimensions of the chalkboard. The wood in the example has a 2-inch border around the edges. Stick painter’s tape along the marked boundaries to make a fresh edge.
